Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers (Delray Beach, Gluten-Free Pizza)

My mom and my sister flew in this morning to West Palm and I headed up to my family’s place in Delray Beach to get lunch with them and my aunt. We went to Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers because I found out they have gluten-free pizza and my mom is gluten-free like me. I love Delray and Atlantic Ave and am glad I get to spend time up there when aunts, uncles, cousins, and my immediate family are in town (I plan to do a post about it sometime soon). Atlantic Ave is a great street with tons of restaurants and shops, very similar to Los Olas Blvd, and especially this time of year is very busy.

Mellow Mushroom has locations all across the country, including right in the middle of the Pearl of Portland, but I had never heard of it before. The physical restaurant is really cool- it has a nice covered outdoor patio and they have a lot of cool art on the walls inside. It gives off a funky brewpub feel to me and they definitely have quite a number of beers on draft and in bottles.

Something I think that shows their commitment to providing a gluten-free product is that they’re very explicit on what pizza toppings are gluten-free and there was a note on their menu that said all their staff are trained about gluten.

Since my family was visiting we definitely needed to sit outside, which is pretty much a requirement for eating out this time of year with the beautiful weather.

For the food I got a pepperoni and ground beef pizza and my mom got a pizza with a lot of different veggies and bacon on it. My sister (who is not gluten-free) had a Italian hoagie and my aunt had a little bit of everything, plus some hummus and veggies they shared as an appetizer (they said the humus was really good). I enjoyed the pizza at Mellow Mushroom. It has a similar thin crust that I’ve found at all the gluten-free pizza places down here in South Florida but it was a bit doughier and less dry than places like Pizza Fusion and Pizza Rustica. The toppings were high-quality too and it had an “American” flavor similar to Naked Pizza as compared to the more “Italian” or “Roman” flavor of Pizza Rustica and Pizza Fusion. My mom and sister and aunt liked everything they had. The gluten-free pizza only comes in medium and my sister’s hoagie was quite large so there were leftovers for everyone.

Mellow Mushroom is a great place to get gluten-free pizza if you’re in the area, especially for more of a sit-down restaurant experience. They have a great atmosphere, nice outdoor seating, and tons of beer on tap and in bottles (plus some cider on tap I noticed!). We’re having a big family wedding in Delray in April and it’s just around the corner from the hotel everyone will be staying at, so I definitely think I’ll be back.
