A notable restaurant I’ve been to both of the last two summers in Philly is the Jamaican Jerk Hut on South Street- both being very successful visits. What’s great about it is that most seating during the summer is on a huge grass lawn, which makes it an incredible place to be on a summer night with a breeze. It also often has a live DJ that adds to the relaxing atmosphere (nights with this there is an entertainment fee of $2-3). Add in delicious food and a BYOB policy (common in Philly) and you have a slam dunk.
The Jamaican Jerk Hut is very laidback and relaxed. Most seating is on plastic chairs and picnic tables out on the lawn and if you BYOB they’ll bring out plastic tubs filled with ice for you to put them in (there is a $5 bottle fee per 6 pack- but this ends up most likely being cheaper than booze at a restaurant). It’s a great place to sit for awhile, eat, drink, and visit.
The food is a combination of tropical and BBQ. Items include coconut shrimp, jerk and BBQ wings, a variety of jerk and curry dishes, variety of stews, seafood, and rotis (which are whole-wheat flatbreads with smashed chickpeas in between the layers and stuffed with curry meat). I got a weekend special- the Dunn River BBQ ribs, which were incredible! The ribs had a ton of meat on them and the sauce was a sweet tangy with a bit of spiciness to it. It came with a side of rice and beans on it (one of my favorite sides of all time) and some fried plantains. The food was delicious and very filling! My friends got a variety of dishes like the curry chicken that they all loved.
I’ve heard nothing but recommendations and ravings from Philly locals and friends who have visited so if you’re in the mood for good food and/or a relaxing atmosphere (especially on a summer night) then I’d recommend Jamaican Jerk Hut as something to be on the top of your list.
