A First Timer- Gluten-Free Biscuits and Gravy: Creative Juices Natural Cafe (St. Augustine)

I have tons and tons of blog posts to catch up on, including several trips outside of Miami. Usually I go chronologically from earliest to most recent, but I decided this time to start with the most recent (to help keep me motivated and on track, plus since things are more fresh in my mind). This last week I had conferences in Jacksonville and Tampa. As soon as I found out about the Jacksonville trip, a side trip to St. Augustine was planted in my mind. I had never been, but I had wanted to visit for years. I am a huge history fan and come on it’s the oldest city in the U.S.! I decided it was too big of an opportunity to pass up and booked my flight to go up a day early. I rented a car and got in a good 26 hours in St. Augustine.

I didn’t do as much research beforehand as I usually do for my trips, but I had done enough to have a few restaurants in mind (especially gluten-free). One that piqued my interest was a place with gluten-free biscuits and gravy! It was at Creative Natural Juices Cafe across the bridge from Old City. It wasn’t open on Sundays, so I decided it would be my first stop for lunch on Saturday when I got in.

The cafe is in a strip mall along Anastasia Boulevard (A1A). The menu is a combination of breakfast foods, sandwiches, and then juices. It’s gluten-free, vegan-friendly, and locally sourced. I was seriously considering getting both the gluten-free biscuits and gravy and the gluten-free pancakes. I decided to not overdo it though and just went for the biscuits and gravy. You have the option of getting the gravy with pieces of turkey sausage or vegetables. Of course I went for the pieces of turkey sausage.

I never had biscuits and gravy before (gluten-free or otherwise), so I didn’t really have any expectations. The biscuits reminded me more of like a multi-grain cross between a bagel and English muffin than a buttermilk-like biscuit, but it still was a “gluten-like” treat. I was able to cut off a small piece of the biscuit without gravy and it tasted “bready.” Texture-wise it all worked with the gravy and sausage. I’ve never been a huge gravy fan when it’s the kind at Thanksgiving, but I liked this. It was flavorful and made it a hearty dish put all together.

Even though my trip was brief and the biscuits and gravy was the only thing I got, I was glad I made the trip. It was good to check biscuits and gravy off the “dish list.” If I’m back I probably would get it again and try the pancakes or maybe one of the sandwiches. If you’re someone looking for fresh juices or vegan/vegetarian options this looked like a go-to place (and if you’re gluten-free and vegan/vegetarian it probably would be perfect). Gluten-frees in St. Augustine looking for breakfast or lunch should take a look at Creative Natural Juices, especially if you’re looking to try biscuits and gravy.
